Quantum computing is all about finding a new way of solving problems that are impossible for classical computers to solve, or at least solve in a reasonable amount of time.
And that is where quantum algorithms come into play.
They are specialized algorithms that are designed specifically to run on quantum computers.
One of the most famous quantum algorithms is the Grover algorithm.
It is named after its inventor Lov Grover and is used to search an unsorted database of N items in only O (√N) time.
To give you an idea of its power, Grover's algorithm can search through a database of 1 billion entries in just 31 clock cycles, whereas classical computing algorithms would take much, much longer.
The effectiveness of the Grover algorithm stems from its use of quantum superposition and quantum interference.
In classical computing, we look at each item from the database one by one, but Grover's algorithm instead looks at all the items at once.
It does this by placing all the database items into a quantum superposition, which allows each item to exist in two states simultaneously.
Then, the algorithm applies a series of quantum gates with the goal of amplifying the amplitude of the correct item.
The other algorithm that we are going to talk about today is the Shor algorithm.
Shor's algorithm is a quantum algorithm for integer factorization.
The ability to factor numbers into prime factors is critical for many classical encryption schemes such as RSA, and Shor's algorithm is capable of breaking these codes in polynomial time.
Shor's algorithm is based on the quantum Fourier transform; it takes advantage of the inherent parallelism in quantum computation to dramatically speed up the process of finding prime factors of large numbers.
By applying some quantum gates, the algorithm creates a superposition of all possible factors of a given number, and then measures the result.
With just a few measurements, it is possible to find a factor of the original number.
Shor's algorithm has the potential to revolutionize modern cryptography and is a significant reason why people are so excited about quantum computing.
So, there you have it folks, two of the most powerful quantum algorithms for performing search and factoring, Grover and Shor.
