The city is located in one of the most biodiversical regions of Colombia, close to large ecological reserves such as the Emberá natural national park. It is also one of the regions with the largest number of indigenous reserves.

Quibdó is located on the right bank of the Atrato River, one of the main tributaries of the country and one of the areas with the highest rainfall in the world. It is located at an altitude of 43 m s. n. m. and has a temperature whose average is 28 degrees Celsius. Distance from Bogota 557 kilometers (346 mi).​

The city of Quibdó is the only departmental centre located between the mountain range and the coast. Due to its characteristics, it is the midpoint of natural link that exists between the two Colombian coasts, through the rivers Atrato and San Juan.

Centrality relations converge over the area of the isthmus San Pablo, specifically between Quibdó and Istmina, and are explained by the river communication relations that exist between the two large rivers: Atrato and San Juan.

The predominant human group in the city is Afro-Colombian and in the second proportion the white-imestied communities coming from the interior of the country, especially from the Paisa, and Indo-American region Emberá and Waunanas.

According to the figures presented by DANE of the census 2005, the ethnographic composition of the city is:​

Black (87.5 per cent)
Mestizos y Blancos (10.2%)
Indigenous people (2.3%)
