STORYLINE
The leader of Peru's once powerful Shining Path rebel group rejected all charges levelled at him on Wednesday and further denied he was captured by police and soldiers.
Authorities say the rebel commander known as "Comrade Artemio" was captured along with two of his confederates on 12 February after he was shot by an
infiltrator. Flores, however, says he handed himself in.
Artemio's given name is Florindo Eleuterio Flores Hala.
At the second hearing of the trial, Flores entered the courtroom accompanied by security officers and waved his fist in defiance towards the press and television cameras, mimicking the gesture of another Path leader, Abimael Guzman, founder and ideologue of the guerilla group currently in prison.
Flores Hala is being held at the same maximum security prison where Guzman has been held since his 1992 capture.
The rebel leader faced terrorism, drug trafficking and other charges. He has pleaded innocent to those charges.
"I will not take responsibility for the military actions for which I am being charged and I absolutely reject all accusations," said the rebel leader.
The prosecution requested that Flores Hala be sentenced to life imprisonment plus a hefty fine.
Shining Path waged a bloody war against the state but largely collapsed following Guzman's capture.
Flores Hala was the last of the Shining Path's Central Committee to be captured.
Remnants of the Maoist rebel movement, allied with drug traffickers in Peru's coca-growing heartland, have become more active in recent years.
More than 80 soldiers have been killed since 2008, the vast majority in ambushes.
