Could there be a real island at the end of the world?

A group of Inuits came to Fairbanks, Alaska led by an old man. He carried a piece of frozen flesh about a foot square. Since his group had skins to trade, one of the white men who came to barter with them asked what they planned to do with the piece of flesh.

But the old man stepped back in alarm. He said the flesh was a “luck-giver” and that they wouldn’t sell it. He said it came from “far, far up.” And this was the weirdest part: He said it came from a big demon—a big demon that had killed two of their tribe.

What the heck happened? Well, more than a year before that, around 1914, these Inuits had been on an incredible journey through the Arctic, which took them beyond the frigid waters of Alaska and into somewhere impossible: a warm oasis that was an unknown world.
