As the Stockton community prepares to pay their final respects to Fire Captain Max Fortuna who was shot and killed on the job, Stockton's Fire Chief Rick Edwards shared the legacy Fortuna leaves behind. The 21-year veteran of the Stockton Fire Department died Monday after being shot while responding to a dumpster fire in the area of Aurora and Washington Streets. “I would have been heartbroken for anybody on this job. And when I found it who it was… I just broke and cried,” Edwards said. Edwards asked to talk around a table inside fire station two, where he said firefighters usually gather, as he reminisced. “His smile, I mean it was… it was addicting. I mean he could get the whole table here to break out in laughter,” Edwards recalled.
