The Israeli Air Force reportedly conducted an airstrike with F-35 fighter jets on a building near Iran's embassy in Damascus, Syria Monday, resulting in the deaths of at least six individuals, including a high-ranking Iranian commander.
The strike targeted a building adjacent to the Iranian embassy in the Mezzeh area of Damascus. Iranian sources claim the building housed Iran's consulate and ambassador's residence.
Among the casualties was Mohammad Reza Zahedi, a senior official in Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps, who was reportedly a key commander in the IRGC's Quds Force responsible for operations in Syria and Lebanon.
This is a major escalation and Iranian leaders have already promised a "harsh" response.
