Gear reducers are devices used to transmit mechanical power from an electric motor or other driver to a driven load. In the world of pumps, they convert the high speed, low torque input from the motor to a low speed, high torque output at the pump. To understand how they accomplish this we’ll need to look inside. Inside you’ll find 1 or more pairs of gears. Each pair consists of a smaller driver gear and a larger driven gear. The ratio of the number of teeth on the driven gear to the number of teeth of the driver determines the reduction ratio of that pair. For this particular gearbox, the driven gear has 80 teeth…the driver gear has 29 teeth…so this single reduction gearbox has a ratio of 2.76:1. This means that the input shaft must be rotated 2.76 times to fully rotate the output shaft once. Dividing the motor’s speed by this ratio will determine what the pump speed would be. Gear reducers are mostly utilized for large pumps or in applications where the liquid is viscous or abrasive. They are highly efficient and offer a simple and reliable means of slowing the pump when required.
