Met Éireann has said it was "not surprised" snow fell across the country this morning given forecasts for a mix of rain and sleet in recent days but has acknowledged warnings were issued "at very short notice", with Status Orange warnings warranted in some areas.
Heavy snow hit several counties this morning leading to widespread travel disruption and some school closures.
A nationwide Status Yellow ice warning is in place until 9am tomorrow, with Met Éireann warning of potentially hazardous travelling conditions.
A separate Status Yellow rain warning is in effect for Dublin, Louth, Meath and Wicklow until 3am tomorrow.
