Adrenal Fatigue | How to Control Cortisol | 3 Ways to Reverse Adrenal Fatigue-
Your adrenal glands are 2 small, walnut sized glands sitting on top of your kidneys.
They serve the role of helping your body to cope with a wide array of stressors through their control on a number of hormones and their release into our bodies. These hormones include cortisol, aldosterone, adrenaline, noradrenaline, estrogen, and testosterone.
These hormones play a crucial role in:
Maintaining metabolism and blood sugar levels
Regulating inflammation
Electrolyte balance
Managing the fight or flight stress response
Maintaining pregnancy
Adrenal fatigue occurs when too much stress has been placed on your adrenal glands for an extended period of time.
Life stress (divorce, loss of job, etc), poor diet, environmental pollutants, trauma, lack of sleep, and many other stressors can contribute to adrenal fatigue.
Once sufficient stress has been placed on the adrenal glands, their function will begin to decline.
This decline in adrenal function can cause changes in your metabolism, electrolyte balance, and cardiovascular system.
3 Quick and Simple Ways to Combat Adrenal Fatigue
1. Himalayan Pink Sea Salt
When your adrenal gland is fatigued, it no longer produces enough adrenaline, aldosterone, or cortisol, hormones crucial to many aspects of our health.
Aldosterone plays a crucial role in the sodium balance in our cells. When our body does not produce enough aldosterone, our need for sodium increases.
The best way to combat this is the sprinkle Himalayan Pink Sea Salt over our food, or even better, in our water.
Not only does this provide our body with sodium (and hydration if you add it to water), but it also contains essential trace minerals that most of us are deficient in.
Listen to your body here - if you are craving sodium you likely need more, and if the taste is too much, you can cut back.
2. Increase Your Time Sleeping
Under normal conditions, the level of circulating cortisol in your body should be higher in the morning and lower in the evenings.
When you are experiencing stress or adrenal fatigue, these cortisol levels can become mixed up, leading to difficulties falling asleep, staying asleep, and waking up in the morning.
If later in the day you experience a release of cortisol, or if your body isn’t correctly kicking into the parasympathetic calming system, your internal clock is likely disrupted.
Additionally, those who suffer from adrenal fatigue can cause metabolic dysfunction, which is why many will experience frequent sweet and salty food cravings.
Adrenal fatigue often presents with symptoms of hypoglycemia ever few hours, and when this occurs during the night, it can lead to increased cortisol levels and waking up in the middle of the night with a difficulty falling back asleep. (4)
3. Ashwagandha
Adaptogenic herbs have been shown to help modulate our stress response.
The support for adaptogens goes far back to Ayurvedic medicine, and is currently finding support in clinical and animal studies.
Case Study:
In a 2012 study published i n the Indian Journal of Psychological Medicine, a double-blind, randomized, placebo controlled study was conducted on adults with a history of chronic stress.
64 subjects were split into 2 groups, one taking one capsule of 300 mg Ashwagandha root and the other one capsule of placebo once daily for 60 days.
Before and after the treatment serum cortisol levels were measured and the participants took a standard stress-assessment questionnaire.
Following the 60 days of treatment, both the serum cortisol levels and scores on the stress-assessment scales were significantly reduced for the Ashwagandha root group relative to the placebo group.
Through helping to normalize cortisol levels, this helps to reduce the strain on the adrenal glands, helping to restore hormonal balance. (3)
