Anthony von Mandl lives in the future, which is where you will find his vision of pinot noir, Next World-style, when you visit Martin's Lane Winery in East Kelowna. Like no other in the world, the winery was built for pinot noir from the ground up on a steep sloping property where the grapes move from the top of the winery to the bottom without ever seeing a pump. Much further south, another Von Mandl creation, Checkmate Artisanal Winery, clings to the hillside in British Columbia's first sub-appellation, the Golden Mile Bench. Here, there is an intense focus on merlot and chardonnay. In a new format at GOW, we talk unedited with winemakers Shane Munn of Martin's Lane and Phil McGahan of Checkmate Artisanal Winery. Munn is a New Zealander, and MaGahan is Australian. While their personalities are polar opposite, their passionate devotion to single vineyard sites and high-quality wine is identical.
