Ashland, Ore.-Two Alaska State Troopers were shot to death Thursday, one of them with local ties.
According to Ashland Police, Sergeant Patrick Johnson, known as "Scott," was an All-American wrestler at Southern Oregon University and a reserve at Ashland Police Department in the early 90s.
Johnson and Trooper Gabriel Rich were flown into the isolated town of Tenana to investigate a report someone had "brandished a firearm."
"[...] very intelligent, had great instincts that police officers should have. He knew that that's what he wanted to do for a career and so he moved his girlfriend at the time, uh, back up to Alaska because both of them were from Alaska," said Sgt. Bob Smith with the Ashland Police Dept.
Both troopers were occasionally featured on the National Geographic Channel show "Alaska State Troopers."
Nathaniel Kangas and Arvin Kangas were arrested in connection with the shooting.
Law enforcement in the area held a procession in honor of the two slain troopers.
