This webinar discusses findings from the 2018 HDIAC State of the Art Report on Department of Defense Considerations for Disaster Response.
Co-presented by HDIAC subject matter experts Gregory Nichols and Joel Hewett, the webinar reviews highlights of the report and offers a summary of emerging trends and future directions. Disaster response is of high importance to the defense and homeland security communities due to its important place in the National Security Strategy and the history of DoD response to several large-scale disasters abroad since 2011.
Overview includes information on risk and crisis communication, social media technologies, data overload management, responder protection, search and rescue operations, supply chain management, and radiation and nuclear emergency response.
Greg Nichols is a subject matter expert at HDIAC. Previously, he managed the Nanotechnology Studies Program at ORAU in Oak Ridge, Tennessee, where he provided expertise on nanotechnology-related topics and conducted research. Prior to ORAU, Nichols spent 10 years in various health care roles, including five as a Hospital Corpsman in the U.S. Navy. He has published and presented on a variety of topics including nanotechnology, public health, and risk assessment. Nichols has a Master of Public Health from the University of Tennessee and holds a Certified in Public Health credential from the National Board of Public Health Examiners.
Joel Hewett is a subject matter expert with HDIAC, where he applies a decade of experience in energy technology issues. He holds an M.S. from the Georgia Institute of Technology in the history and sociology of technology and science, where he was the inaugural Melvin Kranzberg fellow. Hewett also holds an A.B. in literature from Davidson College.
