Title: S. Korea, U.S., Japan to hold trilateral nuke talks in Seoul on Tuesday
We start off with talks between the chief nuclear envoys of South Korea, the United States and Japan... that will kick off tomorrow here in Seoul.
Their discussions will center around ways to step up pressure on Pyongyang... as the reclusive regime continues to issue military threats.
Kim Min-ji has the details.
The chief nuclear envoys of South Korea, the U.S., and Japan will be in Seoul on Tuesday to share their assessments of the recent situation in North Korea and its nuclear threats.
The two-day meeting will involve Korea′s top nuclear envoy, Hwang Joon-kook, and his U.S. and Japanese counterparts, Sung Kim and Junichi Ihara.
The three serve as delegates to the long-stalled six-party talks on denuclearizing North Korea.
Seoul′s foreign affairs ministry says the three will seek to make substantial progress in the North Korean nuclear issue through deterrence, pressure and dialogue.
The trilateral talks come at a time of growing uneasiness about the situation in North Korea.
Pyongyang recently claimed it successfully test-fired a ballistic missile from a submarine... and said it now has the capability to miniaturize nuclear weapons, a crucial step toward building nuclear-tipped missiles.
North Korean leader Kim Jong-un also reportedly had defense minister Hyon Yong-chol executed,... raising doubts about his grasp on power.
Meanwhile, Seoul, Washington and Tokyo are seeking to take action against the regime at the UN,... saying that the recent test firing is a violation of UN resolutions.
The last meeting between the three countries was held in January in Tokyo,... when they agreed that the North should first demonstrate it is sincere about denuclearization before returning to the six-party talks.
The talks, involving the two Koreas, the U.S., China, Japan and Russia, were last held in December 2008.
