James Byron Dean was an American actor who became a cultural icon of teenage disillusionment and social estrangement. He starred in three major films: Rebel Without a Cause (1955), East of Eden (1955), and Giant (1956). Dean's death in a car crash at age 24 cemented his legendary status. Dean's portrayal of Cal Trask in East of Eden earned him a posthumous Oscar nomination for best actor in 1956.
