Serpae Tetra Care Sheet
Scientific name: Hyphessobrycon Callistus
Common Name Blood Characin, Callistus Tetra, Jewel Tetra, Red Serpae, Serpa Tetra, Red Minor Tetra, Serpae Tetra
Origin
Serpae tetras originally come from South America, where their preferred habitat is the slow-flowing streams and tributaries of the Rio Guaporé and Rio Paraguay basins in Brazil and Paraguay
Coloration
Being one of the "Blood Tetras" the base body color is brilliant red to reddish brown. A black comma shaped spot is located just behind the gill cover. The dorsal fin is tall and colored black with white fringe, it may have a reddish hue to it. The tail, anal, and ventral fins are red. The anal fin is fringed in black and white layers.
Body Size and Lifespan: This fish will generally reach about 1 1/2 inches (4 cm) in length.
These fish generally have a lifespan of 3 to 7 years, though some have reportedly lived up to 10 years.
Tank Size
They are schooling fish. So you have to provide minimum 15 gallon / 60 litre tank.
Tank Decoration
Use a substrate of river sand, well planted with rocks and add driftwood/bogwood. They love playing in a moderate to strong current.
Hardy Fish
Serpae tetra is a very hardy fish. Because they can tolerate wide range of water temperature ( 20 – 28 °C) and ph level (5.0 – 7.5).
Diet
Serpae tetras are omnivorous. They like to eat live foods such as insects, invertebrates, blood worms and brine shrimps. They will also accept high quality flake, micro pellet, freeze-dried, and frozen foods.
Tankmates
This tetra is generally peaceful fish. They are comfortable with Corydoras as companions, as they are both quite peaceful and other tank mates like Guppies,Nion Tetras, Rasboras, Mollies & Platies
Sexual Differences
Males are generally similar and smaller than females. Males are more brightly red colored. Females are also fuller body than males.
Breeding
Dimly lit tank with some fine leaved plants on the bottom to catch the eggs will encourage breeding. Be sure to remove parents after they have spawned to avoid them eating the eggs.
