Coniston and Hawkshead are two pleasant villages of close proximity surrounded by beautiful water and mountains. They are popular among walkers for their magnificent scenery and for people who love poetry and history.
Coniston is a small village located in the Southern Part of the Lake District national park and settled between Coniston water and the Coniston old man. It was once a farming village and an area for the mining of copper and slate. With the construction of the railway, Coniston became a transport hub that attracted not only the traders but also visitors that would like to see the natural beauty of the area. As a result, it became a popular tourist destination during the Victorian era until the present time especially for those who are into outdoor activities such as rock climbing, hiking and kayaking. Hawkshead grew to be an important wool market before becoming a market town when the monks lost ownership after the dissolution of the monasteries in 1537. The village is well preserved with many of the building dating back to the 17th century. The village is quite small so its easy to walk around. There are overhanging gables that add character to the village and warren of alleys that leads to other areas.
