Today, we’re stacking the ProCo Rat 2 pedal with a fuzz pedal, a boost pedal and an overdrive pedal to hear which sounds best!
I recently tried this just with different types of overdrives, and the feedback that I got was that I absolutely must stack my Rat with a fuzz pedal next – and this is the first time I’ve ever done that!
So, the pedals we’re pitting against the Rat today are the Digitech DOD Carcosa Fuzz, the TC Electronic Spark Booster, and the Greer Amps Lightspeed Organic Overdrive pedal.

The Carcosa is a pretty gnarly fuzz, and currently the only one I own (there are more fuzzes to come – stay tuned for that!). The Carcosa is an extremely versatile fuzz pedal, and pretty forgiving too, making it ideal for a player like me who’s yet to really grasp the full good ness of fuzz as an effect.
You all know the Greer Lightspeed – it’s one of the very best transparent overdrive pedals around, and stacks fantastically with everything. And the final pedal in this test is the humble TC Spark Booster, which is a super affordable yet incredibly versatile and top sounding boost pedal.
But… which sounds best stacked with the Rat? That’s what we’re going to find out! Today I’m also trying placing the Rat first in the signal chain, as well as last, so we can really hear how the pedals interact with one another.
I’ve played an indie rock loop using the bridge humbucker of my Epiphone Les Paul Traditional Pro for today’s video, so sit back and listen to the tones, and tell me which stacking combination you prefer!
And, of course, I’d also love to get more of your recommendations on which pedals you think sound best in combination with a Rat! What else should I try? Let me know in the comments!

My setup was as follows: I ran the pedals into the front end of my Hughes & Kettner AmpMan Classic pedal amp, then went from the Red Box DI straight into my Focusrite Scarlett 2i4, which went into Logic Pro X. That’s it. No post-processing on the sounds was done. Oh, and I used my Boss RC-10R to record and play the loops. Here’s some links to those bits of gear:
