Falling down the reactor shaft when Obi-Wan Kenobi cut him in two, Maul channeled his hatred of the Jedi to keep himself alive through the Force. His damaged body ended up in a trash container and was dumped on the garbage planet Lotho Minor. As he ruminated on his rage, the former Sith slowly lost his mind.
Sustaining himself on a diet of vermin, Maul was discovered by his brother Savage Opress. Having constructed a set of spider-like legs from the garbage around him, Savage discovered his brother had lost all sense of himself as he rambled incoherently.
Returning Maul to their homeworld of Dathomir, Savage brought his deranged brother to the Nightsister Mother Talzin who healed the fallen Sith’s mind and body using dark magic.
His mind returned, Maul took his brother as an apprentice and became obsessed with finding Kenobi.
