The University of Zagreb was founded in 1669. It was run by the Jesuits for nearly a century and known as Neoacademia Zagrabiensis. Faculties of Philosophy, Theology and Law were established by 1776. The new building was opened in 1874, which also marked the beginning of the modern University of Zagreb.
Today, the university has over 30 different colleges scattered across the town. There are currently about 72,000 students enrolled.
To mark the 300th anniversary of the university, a bronze statue "History of Croats" (Povijest Hrvata) was revealed in the courtyard. The statue was originally designed by Ivan Meštrović, a renowned Croatian sculptor, in 1932. Its bronze copy was cast and revealed in 1970.
