STORYLINE
Runners carried the Olympic flame through Hong Kong on Friday, as organisers sort to prevent any repeat of the protests and chaos that disrupted the flame during its 20-nation overseas tour.
The eight-hour relay through canyons of skyscrapers proved challenging for leaders and police in the Chinese territory.
Eager to deflect from security interruptions and protests that have marred the torch relay around the world, officials ensured security was tight.
However, there were still tensions on the streets as large groups of flag-waving torch supporters reportedly shouted insults at pro-Tibet and human rights protesters, forcing them to seek refuge in police vans.
After being lit on stage during an opening ceremony, Hong Kong leader Donald Tsang passed the torch to Hong Kong's gold winning medallist for wind surfing, Li Lai San who kicked off the torch relay.
Li carried the torch through the streets of Hong Kong, where she passed it onto one of Hong Kong's best known entertainers, singer and actor, Andy Lau.
Andy jogged with the torch, until he was able to hand over to singer and actress Kelly Chan.
Other runners include 21 tycoons and 13 politicians.
Pansy Ho, a daughter of casino magnate Stanley Ho, will carry the flame, along with Victor Li Tzar-kuoi, son of Hong Kong's richest man, Li Ka-shing.
