I Split My Bees After Finding Swarm Cells: Did They Make It? 🐝🔍
In this video, I’m sharing the experience of finding swarm cells in my hives and making the decision to split my bees. When bees prepare to swarm, they create swarm cells as a sign that they’re planning to move some of the colony to a new home. By splitting the hive, I hoped to prevent the swarm and create a new colony. But did the split succeed?
Why Split a Hive After Finding Swarm Cells?
Swarm cells indicate the colony is preparing to swarm, which means half of the colony could soon leave, impacting honey production and colony strength. Splitting the hive can help avoid swarming, give the bees more space, and establish a new colony. I’ll explain why I chose to split the hive and discuss the advantages of this approach for swarm management and hive expansion.
Step-by-Step Guide to Splitting a Hive
In this video, I’ll demonstrate how I split the hive after identifying swarm cells, covering each step from selecting frames with brood, honey, and swarm cells to moving them into a new hive box. You’ll see how to ensure both the original and split colonies have a good balance of resources, including food stores, brood, and space for the bees to thrive.
Checking In: Did the Split Colony Succeed?
After a successful split, the new colony should ideally start raising a new queen from the swarm cells. I’ll walk you through my follow-up inspections to check if the split colony succeeded in making a new queen, how to monitor their progress, and what to do if the new colony struggles.
