The phrase 'future of money' is frequently used by the mainstream finance industry when referring to cosmetic changes to the user experience layer of finance. The future is supposed to be a world of endless convenience and customisability, with seamless interfaces and gadgets that allow you to interact with banks with speed and ease. The vision seldom includes any political critique of finance, however, and seldom imagines possibilities beyond the existing cartels of banks and payments intermediaries. In this talk we will explore the deeper changes we can make to money systems, the different groups pursuing those changes, and the differing visions that accompany these initiatives.
Brett Scott is a journalist, campaigner and the author of the Heretic's Guide ti Global Finance: Hacking the Future of Money (2013).
