The public is invited to attend this year's Veteran's Day celebration at the Mt Soledad National Veterans Memorial in La Jolla, California.
This year is going to be very special and unique! We'll be honoring the Navajo Code Talkers on Sat., Nov. 5 from 11am - 12pm
Our keynote speaker will be U.S. Marine Brig. Gen. James A. Ryans, Assistant Division Commander, 1st Marine Division.
We are excited to honor the legacy of Navajo Code Talkers this year.....The first class of 29 Navajo code talker U.S. Marine recruits completed initial training in 1942 and these men developed a unique military code using their mostly unwritten language, and were placed in a guarded room until this task was completed.
Although various other Native American languages were used as forms of communication during WWII, the Navajo language was developed into a top-secret code, in large part because is extremely complicated to learn. It’s comprised of multiple dialects and has a complex syntax and phonology, making it an ideal language for code. It’s estimated that at the outbreak of World War II, fewer than 30 non-Navajo's could understand the language. Regan Hawthorne, CEO of the Navajo Code Talkers Museum will be in attendance and one of our guest speakers.
If you can't make it, we'll also stream live at veteransdaylive.org.
The Mt. Soledad National Veterans Memorial is one of the most unique veterans’ memorials in the nation and stands high on La Jolla’s Mt. Soledad, offering panoramic views of San Diego County. It is the only Memorial that honors veterans, living or deceased. More than 5,800 individual veteran tributes, embedded on black granite plaques, are mounted onto 11 curved walls honoring our military veterans.
