On the 18th-19th of August 2016 Prof John Mbiti spoke at a conference at the Faculty of Theology, Stellenbosch University. Prof Mbiti is a notable, and celebrated, Biblical Scholar whose work on the translation of the New Testament, and his contribution to the study of African religion and culture, has won him great acclaim.
On the occasion of this conference he was received special recognition by receiving the Archbishop of Cape Town’s special award (other recipients include Archbishop Desmond Tutu and Adv Thuli Madonsela).
In this video John Mbiti talks about the reception of Christianity in Africa. He points out the complexity of western influences on the Christian faith, and particularly on the translation of the New Testament text. It is a fascinating video that summarises his views on Christianity, African and the Bible.
