On May 29, 1861, the Confederate capital moved from Montgomery, Alabama, to Richmond. By shifting the seat of government, the Confederacy declared its commitment to the defense of Richmond and the city's vital resources during the American Civil War.
Tredegar proved invaluable to the Confederacy, producing nearly 1100 cannon in its foundries, while the rolling mills turned out iron plating for Confederate naval gunboats.
The legacy of the site of the Tredegar Iron Works however is more than just the site that produced firepower, ship plating, and cannons.
Today, the former walls of the Tredegar Iron Works are actually encased within the American Civil War Museum walls, preserving not only the history of the site but telling a complete story of the American Civil War on the same grounds that participated in it, nearly 200 years ago.
