Due to disruption in train signal system in the wake of fire in Route Relay Interlocking (RRI) cabin at ITARSI railway station, many passenger and express trains passing through BHOPAL division of West Central Railway (WCR) were cancelled. More than 100 trains were affected in BHOPAL division of West Central Railway after signaling system collapsed following a fire in route relaying interlocking (RRI) cabin of ITARSI station, one of biggest railway junctions in country at junction of East-West and North-South railway lines.

Route relay interlocking (RRI) is a system used at big and busy stations to handle high volumes of train movement. With it, an entire route through station can be selected and all associated points and signals along route can be set at once by a switch for receiving, holding, blocking or dispatching trains.

The damage could have been avoided if the Railways authorities had installed a smoke detector at the RRI. The authorities never bothered to install it in the last 34 years since the RRI was set up in 1981.

The movement more than 180 trains to major cities of the country via Itarsi, about 90km from Bhopal have been hit hard since the June 17 fire that completely destroyed the signaling system. The signaling system since the fire is being handled manually.

12214 Delhi Sarai Rohilla – Yesvantpur Duronto Express is made to wait at Itarsi outer for 90 minutes. Finally, we make way into Itarsi with manual signalling coming into play. One can see a freight train awaiting clearance at a distance of 500m. . Flagmen can be seen adjacent to the track waving GREEN flag for our train.

One of them says "I am standing outside in the hot sun for a long time, Please capture me ".

After a technical halt, we depart Itarsi at RED Signal. The ill-fated Itarsi cabin can be seen. Gangmen and many engineers can be seen busy restoring the RRI System.
