After betrayal, most people think that marriage counseling is a solution to the “problem”. But jumping into marriage counseling, especially too soon, might not help as much as you’d think.

First, some counselors think the problem is with the marriage. But marriage is a word. A word in and of itself can’t have a problem. It’s the two people in the marriage who are having problems but their problems are unique to each of them and they each need different things. The betrayed needs support and the unfaithful needs to figure out the root cause of the cheating. You can’t focus on those individual issues in a couple’s session.

Also, some counselors stick to the old model of dealing with infidelity, which is telling the betrayed partner to “just move on, “forgive and forget”, and “you must look to the future, not the past”. Today’s research shows healing is very different than those things. In fact, doing any of those will keep a betrayed partner stuck in perpetual pain.

And finally, counseling can end up focusing on the pain of the betrayed partner. This will allow the unfaithful partner an opportunity to avoid dealing with their own actions because the focus is always on the betrayed partner. That will not get anyone anywhere because the unfaithful partner has A LOT of work to do!
