Many English learners get confused by one simple idea: the idea of long vowels vs short vowels. We have "the long E", the "short i", and so on. The problem is, this is a useless concept for English learners and often causes unnecessary confusion. The thing that determines if a vowel sound is long or short is the stress of the syllable, not the sound itself.
