In 2020, the music community around the world is celebrating the 275th anniversary of birth of the Ukrainian born composer, Maksym Berezovsky. He is often called the “Ukrainian Mozart”, because his work stands out in the development of early classicism in the Ukraine.
The #Berezovsky275 concert is a historically significant event in the country's musical life, because two of the symphonies to be performed for the first time were only recently rediscovered. Printed 200 years ago under the name “Beresciollo”, they are preserved at the Paris Music Archive. Previously, the only known copy of this music was an incomplete score of just one of the two symphonies in the private archive of Kirill Rozumovsky, which is stored in the Vernadsky National Library of Ukraine in Kyiv.
Ukrainian musicologist and art history PhD, Larysa Ivchenko, has been researching this topic for 25 years. Berezovsky’s only exciting Symphony in C major was performed in 2016 at the National Philharmonic Hall for the first time in the Ukraine, conducted by Kirill Karabits. This symphony is regarded as the first example of its genre in Ukrainian music, and the score was found in the archives of the Vatican.
On December 31, 2020 alongside the Symphony in C major, the performance two unknown symphonies will be presented for the first time under the name Berezovsky, having now been found, edited and “brought home” by Kirill Karabits a few days ago.
