RTÉ News reports on the deaths of former Fianna Fáil TDs Noel Davern and Denis Foley.
Davern, a native of Cashel in County Tipperary, was only 23 years old when he was elected to the Dáil in 1969, filling the seat vacated by the sudden death of his older brother Don the previous year. His father Michael also served as a Fianna Fáil TD. During his political career, Davern served as an MEP, as Minister for Education and as Minister of State at the Department of Agriculture and Food. He retired from politics at the 2007 general election.
Foley was born in Tralee in County Kerry and was elected to the Dáil in 1981 at the age of 47. Prior to entering politics, Foley was a rates collector and, in the 1970s, he successfully ran The Central Ballroom in Ballybunion and the ballroom of The Brandon Hotel. He also had an interest in The Hillgrove Hotel in Dingle at one stage, and had extensive property holdings in Tralee. He retired from politics at the 2002 general election. Foley's daughter Norma followed in her father's footsteps by getting elected to the Dáil as a Fianna Fáil TD in 2020. She is the current Minister for Education.
