The United States, the UK and Australia have formed a trilateral partnership,.. dubbed AUKUS, in a move to strengthen security in the Indo-Pacific region.
Under the new pact, the three countries will work to boost capabilities in artificial intelligence and underwater systems.
Sources say the latest move could be an effort to counter China's growing presence.

The U.S., the UK and Australia have agreed to sign a new security pact to share advanced defense technologies.
Speaking at a virtual meeting on Wednesday U.S. President Joe Biden announced that the new partnership is being launched with the UK and Australia as part of efforts to maintain peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific region.
"Today, we're taking another historic step to deepen and formalize cooperation among all three of our nations because we all recognize the imperative of ensuring peace and stability in the Indo-Pacific over the long term."
"The future of the Indo-Pacific will impact all our futures... A partnership that seeks to engage, not to exclude; to contribute, not take; and to enable and empower, not to control or coerce."
Under the new pact, the U.S. and the UK will help Australia acquire nuclear submarine capability over the next 18 months.
"We're opening a new chapter in our friendship and the first task of this partnership will be to help Australia acquire a fleet of nuclear powered submarines, emphasizing of course, that the submarines in question will be powered by nuclear reactors, not armed with nuclear weapons..."
They'll also share information in areas, including AI, long-range strike capabilities and underwater systems.
Although U.S. officials have emphasized that the trilateral partnership is not aimed at a particular country,... watchers say the move is likely a bid to counter China's growing military and tech presence.
The move also comes in line with the Biden administration's push to unite allies against Beijing as tensions between the two countries have escalated over issues on human rights, territory and COVID-19.
