Lumix GH5 High ISO Low Light Test
NOTE: This video only represents what the GH5 image looks like on YouTube... A viewer mentioned that youTube adds it's own flavor of noise reduction, and comparing the upload to the original footage, sure enough they do. The difference isn't huge by any means and this video definitely reflects what to expect on youTube from the GH5. Up to 6400 ISO the footage looks pretty much the same, but at 12500 you can definitely see YouTube's noise reduction kick in. So, I also uploaded the video over on Vimeo. [ Ссылка ] Vimeo seems to more accurately reflect the noise levels. I can't offer downloads as this is a pre-production GH5 and firmware isn't final, and I don't want to misrepresent what the final image will be when the cameras ship.
All cameras are cool these days, and I applaud all manufactures for what they bring to the table. I just happen to be a big fan of Lumix Cameras and the amount of technology they pack into their systems, and settled in on Lumix after many years of working with Nikon, Canon, and Sony systems. There are things I liked about each for sure, but Lumix just seems to understand where I am headed as an artist and entrepreneur at the moment, and I really like that.
With that said, this is a very non-technical test, but sometimes that is more important when it comes to filming in the real world. So, I grabbed the Lumix GH5 and headed out the door to band practice last night with a couple of fast lenses and a tripod.
While the band was warming up I exposed three different images. One at 3200 ISO, one at 6400 ISO, and one at 12500 ISO. I adjusted the aperture accordingly on the GH5 as well to keep the same exposure. This is all filmed in 8bit rather than 10bit 422 internally. The two lenses are used are the Lumix 25mm 1.7 and the Leica 12mm 1.4.
I found the threshold to be around 6400 on the Lumix GH5 for a clean image. I will most certainly push to 12500 for vlogging and personal work where story is all that matters.
Most of my professional work is lit, so I don't usually push beyond 800 ISO. However, for weddings and events I do find myself filming at 1600-3200 a lot even with fast glass when the lights are low in a reception for instance. So, I am thrilled to see that I can now film at 6400 very clean as well for those super low light situations.
So, a simple real world test for me, that I thought I would share out to the world for those interested in more information on the Lumix GH5.
