“Little weeds, little problems. Big weeds, BIG PROBLEMS!” This is so true! My best advice to keep up with the weeds-- “get ‘em when they’re little!” That’s our mantra. The smaller the better. Watch for them to emerge— especially a few days after a warm rain— AND GET THEM RIGHT AWAY!
It won’t even LOOK like you have ANY weeds-- that's the time to "keep up with the weeds!" Look closer... when those TINY weed seedlings grow— and they grow FAST— before you know it you’re working hard to get rid of them. Much harder than if you heed that mantra to “Get ‘em when they’re little!”
These are my tips to very quickly take care of any seedlings emerging. Just throw a little soil over the top of them and snuff them out. Yup! That’s all it takes. We like to hill our corn anyway, so throwing a little more soil over any weeds that germ between the plants or right next to them, just hills them a little more AND covers up those 'would be' weed problems.
And if you don’t have any loose soil to work with— just rub ‘em out. They're so weak and vulnerable when they first emerge-- that's the time to keep up with the weeds. That’s when you REALLY have the upper hand! Use that window! Then you can legitimately say, “Weeds? What weeds?”
