Last week I modified my access cab to contain three-tiered storage behind my driver and passenger seats. This week I carried out a fairly simple shelving project to try to prepare my 2010 Tacoma for some road trips and camping trips.
I first put down a wooden floor in the truck bed. Then, I used 1/2" plywood and 3/4" plywood to create a few different types of shelving. A permanent box holds a "Jumbo-tainer" I got from REI. A side-mount attachment carries the portable fire pit that Lifedoo sent to me a few weeks ago.
Behind that space is a long top-access storage dump. This will be for longer camping necessities, like tents and chairs and possibly a portable stove.
Across the truck bed is "bookshelf-style" storage. This assembly of shelving and storage varies in size to accommodate different containers. Books will most likely be kept near the cab. There is a long open portion around the wheel well for stuffing things into quickly while camping.
I plan on getting a custom-cut rubber mat to fill in the center alley where I will sleep while truck bed camping (if I don't feel like pitching a tent). A 1/4" piece of plywood will rest on top of or below that sleeping mat to protect it from lumber and building materials while I'm either camping or carrying other stuff in the truck.
I also bought some mosquito net to fashion a screen for truck bed camping with the gate down.
All told, I have about 73" x 34" sleeping space in the center alley.
Thanks for watching! Let us know what you think!
Next week I'll be back to more typical THE HONEST CARPENTER content. But, I wanted to get this truck bed camping setup complete so I can continue to take the show out on the road for more contractor teamups!
