Hillsborough River State Park Campground Review Florida State Park Thonotosassa, Florida
Beautiful, Florida State Park campground! This sprawling Florida State Park is located in Thonotosassa, Florida which is not far from the Tampa area. This park has opportunities for hiking, biking, fishing, kayaking, wildlife viewing, picnicking, or just chilling at your campsite. You can also view the rocky rapids right from the trail as the Hillsborough River crashes over them. There is a suspension bridge that takes you over the river to trails on the other side. You won't be bored at Hillsborough River State Park.
There are over 100 sites spread out over three loops at Hillsborough River State Park. The large sites provide 30 or 50 amp electric service and water. There is a dump station for waste.
This is our second stay here. In fact, this is the park we were camping at when all Florida State Parks closed last year due to COVID. We love this park for so many reasons. In this video, we share some observations and experiences between this year and last year.

What we love about Hillsborough River State Park:
1. The River! It's clear, has a rocky bottom, and is simply breathtaking. It is one of Florida's prettiest rivers.
2. The Trails! You can hike many miles throughout the park. There is even a longer trail with a primitive campsite on it. You can hike right along the the river listening to the water rushing over the rocks as you walk. There are boardwalks and a fun suspension bridge that takes you to other trails across the river.
3. Lots to do here: hiking, biking, kayaking, fishing, swimming when the pool is open, camping.
4. Dog walking opportunities
5. Verizon worked great.
6. Scenic area, scenic camp roads
7. Large sites
What we didn't love about Hillsborough River State Park:
1. Not the park's fault, but we were there in caterpillar season, again! They were everywhere. Heads up if visiting in March.
2. Campsites lack privacy brush in between them but they are large providing space between you and your neighbor. This year we were moved to a site right in the middle of two loops and found it to be just fine. Site 5 was large enough that we had our own space and the sites around us were large as well. So even though sites are fairly open, you have your own large space.
Observations/ Experiences between last year and this year:
1. We learned the campground loop road is 2.3 miles.
2. The pool is still closed, sadly.
3. The caterpillars are back.
4. Pleasantly surprised when we were relocated from our more secluded reserved site to site 5 right in the heart of the campground. Great site. 50 amp service!
5. Biking on the Wetlands and Fort King Trail, then on the the Dead River area.
6. Kayaking the Hillsborough River to just past the Dead River, nice six mile paddle.
All in all, another great stay at a Florida State Park.
