At least eight attendees of this year’s Astroworld music festival died after multiple people fell and were trampled during headliner Travis Scott’s performance. The concert continued, despite multiple people being taken away by security for medical attention. Many crowd members called for the show to end and for security and Scott to help people. It’s not confirmed if Scott was able to hear them, but he did pause his performance a few times to have people in need of medical attention removed from the crowd. Scott ultimately continued the show.
The concert was declared a “mass casualty event” by city officials almost 40 minutes after it had began.
The festival was one of the deadliest live music events in U.S. history. In 2011, seven people died at the Indiana State Fair after the stage collapsed. In 1979, 11 people died after a crowd stampeded through venue doors at a concert in Cincinnati for The Who.
