TALIBAN SEIZE TOWN
Yamgan district in the Badakhshan province of northeastern Afghanistan has been seized by the Taliban. A spokesperson from the group stated fighters had taken control of several checkpoints and the district centre. The parliamentary representative for the province, Abdul Wali Niazi, has told local media that seven police had been killed and three had been hostage.Several members of Afghan forces have also been killed.
HAMAS OFF LIST
An Egyptian appeals court canceled a ruling to list the Palestinian group Hamas as a “terrorist organisation.” The move could entail a possible easing of pressure on the Gaza Strip's ruling faction. Hamas welcomed the decision by Egypt, stating that the ruling would help relations with Cairo. Hamas is an offshoot of Egypt's Muslim Brotherhood which Egyptian authorities have declared a terrorist group and outlawed since the military coup of July 2013.
NINE NEW CASES
South Korea's health ministry has reported nine more cases of Middle East Respiratory Syndrome, raising the total to 50 people infected since the outburst of the infection on May 20th. The ministry of Health also announced that one patient had recovered, the first case of discharge from the hospital. MERS has so far claimed four lives, generating public fear as the government was blamed for an ineffective initial response that allowed one man who had returned from Saudi Arabia to infect at least 25 people.
GREECE WARNS CREDITORS
Greek prime minister Alexis Tsipras has warned the IMF, the European Union and the European Central Bank not to impose “humiliating terms” on his country as it seeks bailout funds. He accused the international lenders of massively backtracking on measures agreed in recent months, and of failing to see the need for an end to austerity in their latest offer. Lenders have asked Greece to bundle its four repayments into one lump sum of 1 point 8 billion dollar by June 30.
