Animal notes have been used in perfumes since the beginning of perfume-making. They impart a sensuality, depth, and tenacity to a perfume that is unrivaled. The traditional animal notes are: ambergris, musk, civet and castoreum. However, I have included leather notes in this family as well. In the modern era, most perfumes with animal notes are man-made, non-animal synthetics and accords that are created to simulate the original scents.
Perfumers are trying to recreate the lost powerful compositions of the past, and it is understandable why they are bringing them into existence again; those fragrances had dark twisted facets, and that will appeal to humans for eternity. The mainstream designer market, saturated with sickly sweet and desexualized clean scents, leaves many of us fragrance addicts craving something more.
Why are we attracted to scents that captivate and repulse us at the same time? Psychology tells us there are numerous irrational forces behind certain behaviors and thoughts we ourselves think are purely conscious. Did you know that Carl Jung, the famous psychoanalyst, studied this dark corner of our personality and named it “The Shadow?” It is the belief that there are irrational parts in our personalities that are mostly negative and repressed, and may manifest in the form of dreams or visions. He noted the significance of being aware of this shadow in order to bring certain uncontrolled behaviors to light, and so he encouraged his patients to ‘integrate’ this part of themselves, stating that those who are not aware of their shadow will never be able to see the true evil they are capable of. Therefore, perfume should follow the same fundamental principles of the human psyche: it should be more than a happy-go-lucky statement with no depth, as this naiveté only produces boredom – just like human beings. The ones who mesmerize in more profound ways often exhibit peculiar vulnerabilities and moving oddities.
It is uncomfortable to acknowledge traits in ourselves we do not appreciate, just like it may be tough for some people to confess that they are attracted to certain smells on their partners which may be considered taboo. But still, our brains are wired not only in a logical and intuitive way of thinking, but also in a primitive way. This reptilian side of our psyche might find satiation upon sniffing perfumes that recall body odors such as sweat, or our partners intimate parts after "some foolin’ around" – you were all thinking about it, let’s just put it out there. For instance, a study from UC Berkeley said that women who smelled a chemical typically found in male sweat experienced higher levels of sexual arousal, a faster heart rate, and elevated levels of cortisol – a hormone that is responsible for maintaining sex drive, stress levels and sense of well-being.
