Airplane License Before Helicopter Training. Hello everybody! Kenny with Fort Wayne Helicopters and I wanted to answer a question that Justin brought up recently. This question does come up a lot! The question is, "Should I get my Fixed Wing Rating before I do my Helicopter?"

A lot of people seem think that they are going to save money in the long run if they do the airplane first and then go and do their Helicopter. That may or may not be the case, but that is also what is really not important if you are looking to be a professional Helicopter pilot. When you go to get your first job, the only thing that anybody cares about is how much Helicopter time do you have. Nothing against Fixed Wing, but if you are going to be professional Helicopter Pilot you might as well start in helicopters and log every bit of helicopter flight time that you can because that is what is important to a first helicopter job.

If you want to do your fixed wing flight training first, you can, there is nothing wrong with that especially if you are just flying for pleasure. But if you are going to go for Professional Helicopter Pilot program and fly helicopters for a living then start in helicopter flight training and stick with it. You need to get every bit of helicopter flight training time that you can.
