Turkey calls for an end to tension
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu has called on Iran and Saudi Arabia to end diplomatic tension. He says Ankara is ‘ready to offer any constructive help it can.’ Protesters set parts of Saudi Arabia’s embassy in Tehran on fire after Riyadh executed 47 people, including a prominent Shia cleric. Saudi Arabia, Bahrain, Sudan, Kuwait and the UAE have all cut or downgraded their ties with Iran because of the attack.
Government won’t attend peace talks
The Burundi government says it won’t participate in peace talks with the opposition on Wednesday. At least 300 people have died in anti-government fighting since April. Opposition groups say President Pierre Nkurunziza’s third term in office is unconstitutional. Meanwhile, the country’s former defence minister has pleaded guilty to helping plot the coup attempt in the country last May.
Opposition to be sworn in
Opposition lawmakers in Venezuela’s National Assembly are due to be sworn in on Tuesday. President Nicolas Maduro says there’ll be extra security for the event because opposition supporters have called for rallies The Supreme Court has approved Maduro’s request to block the swearing-in of three opposition deputies. This would take away its so-called super majority and make it more difficult for them to remove Maduro from power.
Missing bookseller ‘in China’
Taiwanese state media have published a letter reportedly written by a bookseller who went missing in Hong Kong. Lee Bo’s note says he’s gone to China and is ‘working with the concerned parties.’ Rights activists say he was probably instructed to write the letter. Lee is one of five booksellers critical of the government in Beijing who have gone missing in recent months. The foreign minister of China has said the booksellers are ‘first and foremost’ Chinese citizens. He’s asked people not to make ‘groundless accusations’ about the disappearances.
