The song is based on an 19th-century melody from Italy with Sephardic influences and the lyrics were written by Giorgos Zalokostas in his poem "To filima" (The Kiss) which was published in 1851. In early 20th century it was used in theatrical performances and in 1903 was sung for the first time in Sephardic dialect. In this a cappella version by Kostika Çollaku, we decided to include both languages (Greek and Jewish)
Sephardic:
Una pastora yo ami
una ija ermoza
De mi chiquez yo la adori
Mas que eya no ami
Un dia que estavamos
en la huerta sentados
Le dishe yo por ti mi flor
me muero de amor
En los sus brasos me apreto
Por amor me bezo
Me respondio con dulsor
Sos chico para amor
Me engrandesi y la bushki
Otro tomo y la pedri
Eya si olvido de mi
Ma siempre yo la ami
English translation:
A shepherdess I loved,
a beautiful girl.
Since I was a boy, I adored her;
but she didn't love me.
One day, when we were
sitting in the garden,
I told her, 'for you, my flower,
I would die of love'.
In her arms she took me,
lovingly she kissed me.
She answered me, sweetly;
"you are too young to love".
I grew up and looked for her,
but to another love, I had lost her.
She had forgotten about me,
but I always loved her.
