Chapter 1 of *Black Myth: Wukong* is a continuation of Chapter 16 from the novel *Journey to the West*, which marks the official start of the journey. In the novel, Tang Sanzang and Sun Wukong encounter the Guanyin Temple, where they meet Elder Jinchi, who becomes envious of Tang's kasaya, a valuable robe. Jinchi, driven by greed, plans to kill Tang and Sun to steal the robe but fails due to Sun Wukong's foresight. After the failed plot, Jinchi commits suicide out of guilt.
In the game, after surviving the fire, Jinchi's disciples Guangzhi and Guangmou transform into yaoguais (monsters), while Jinchi becomes a wight. The player must defeat these enemies and ring a bell to summon Jinchi, a tribute to the novel where Sun Wukong rings a bell to draw Jinchi's attention. Jinchi reveals that he is 270 years old due to magical assistance from Black Bear Guai, a yaoguai who appears later as the final boss of the chapter.
Other notable bosses in Chapter 1 include Lingxuzi, a wolf-like yaoguai and a friend of Black Bear Guai, and the Whiteclad Noble, originally a snake, both resurrected for the game. The game also introduces a mystery regarding Sun Wukong's headband, which paralyzes him in the opening scene, though it had disappeared in the novel after he achieved Buddhahood. The reasons behind these events are unclear and may be explored in later chapters.
