Overview
For folks entering the digital piano realm for the first time, we can safely say that you’re entering at a very exciting time. The bar keeps getting raised faster and faster, to the point that we’ve had a number of astonishing musical experiences with new products in the last year.

The Roland GP-6 is one such model. It replaces the GP-607, which itself was a popular, well-received instrument. But the GP-6 feels so much more sensitive and realistic, particularly regarding the nuance and warmth available in mid and lower-dynamic ranges.

Let’s get into some specs as to why this GP-6 is achieving a whole new level of musicality.

Piano Action
The action present on the GP-6 is essentially an upgraded version of the PHA-50, and they’re referring to it as the Piano Reality Hybrid Premium Keyboard.

The key stick is longer than the average digital piano action, but the big upgrade is that they’ve completely redesigned the touch curve interface with a new type of technology they’re calling Dynamic Sensor Acceleration Technology.

The result is more bandwidth in the mid and upper mid-dynamic range, thus making the action feel much more expressive.

Otherwise, the keys are still a wood/plastic hybrid, while the center pin, escapement and ebony/ivory feel keys are all present once again. From a weighting standpoint, it’s fairly down the middle.

Piano Tone
The GP-6 features a brand-new sound engine, and Roland is calling this the Piano Reality Modeling Premium Sound Engine. They’ve moved to a multi-channel tone production system, much like Kawai innovated with their Novus series hybrids.

The new multi-channel signal is being sent through an 85-watt 5-speaker system, with 2 upward-facing speakers, a downward-facing speaker, and 2 near-field speakers which serve to activate the cabinet. The result from the player's perspective is a much better sense of cabinet resonance.

The tone as a whole is much more balanced and nuanced. They’ve also increased the complexity of tones coming from secondary sources like the pedal system.

Polyphony is limitless for acoustic piano tones. Outside of the acoustic piano tones, things switch over to samples but there’s still a very strong 256 notes of polyphony and 324 total onboard sounds.

Piano Features
Roland has updated the interface by getting rid of all of the buttons which seems to be a common trend right now. The functionality is otherwise similar to the GP-607 with a ton of preloaded classical music, basic features like onboard rhythms and a metronome, as well as things like Transpose and Tuning.

There’s a high level of onboard sound editing possibilities with the ability to quickly adjust things like Ambience, and the Piano Designer which allows you to adjust a host of sound-related parameters, though it sounds incredible out of the box.

The cabinet has been upgraded with a gorgeous aesthetic, and the legs are made from steel for longevity. Finish options will consist of Ebony Polish and White Polish.

Final Thoughts
The GP-6 is incredibly impressive from a musical standpoint. Given the level of performance, the premium required for the grand piano cabinet is very reasonable.

The value is strong, the technology is strong, and for folks seeking the look of a baby grand piano without the requisite maintenance requirements of an acoustic, the GP-6 is easily going to be among the top options available.
