Hello and welcome to the episode, today I’m performing the first service on my 2023 KTM 390 Adventure. I’m performing this at 300 miles and as appose to the 600 miles as manufacturer recommends, but in this video you will see why I’m doing this prematurely, so stay tuned until the end.
right, so the first thing you want to do is start the engine and allow to idle for 5 minutes.
while its idling remove the sump guard with a 4 mm hex bit as shown
put all your bolts in a pot so you dont lose them
now switch the engine off
place a suitable under the bike, it will need to hold just under 2 litres
using an 18 mm socket remove the oil gauze filter bolt, its important to use a 6 sided socket as a multi groove socket can damage the bolt heads.
allow oil drain for a minute
using pliers gently remove the gauze filter
now look at the state of this after 300 miles, imagine waiting 600 miles. but at least its doing the job
using an 8mm socket, remove the oil filter cap as shown
using a small pick or flat driver, remove the oil filter, do not pry on the engine casing
now there is one more drain bolt in the centre of the engine
using a 6mm hex bit unscrew the bolt, make sure the hex bit is inserted all the way in to avoid rounding the bolt. you can remove the sump bracket for easy access.
you can still see that this small filter has collected more metal filing
remove the oil filler cap
you dont have to do this but you can tilt the bike left to right in order to drain the oil from the edges of the sump.
spray everything down and clean with a non microfibre cloth
clean all the parts
normally you would replace this paper filter but i will doing that in another 300 miles,
time to reinstall the parts, using your fingers only, screw the lower sump bolt in and tighten to 12nm
now push the left oil gauze all the way in.
screw the 18mm bolt in with your fingers and tighten to 15nm
push the paper filter in nice and firmly
push the cap on and make sure its flush all the way around
install the bolts and tighten to 10nm
give everything a wipe down
add fresh oil to the engine, i put 1.2 litres in for now and the inspection glass level was on the minimum
install the cap, start the engine and allow to run for 30 seconds.
now let the bike sit for 2 minutes
add the rest of the oil until the inspection glass mark touches the max mark as shown
i used 1.7 litres of oil in total
when checking oil level its very important the bike is on flat ground and sitting upright
start the engine and check for leaks while its running.
install the sump guard as shown, you can use some grease on the bolts to stop them corroding in the future.
final check on the oil level
here are the tools you need.
a clean cloth, pliers, small pick or flat driver, 18mm socket, 4mm allen hex, 6mm allen hex, 8mm socket, appropriate oil, parts cleaner, and a suitable draining bowl. please take your old oil to your local garage or recycle centre.
right, the last thing to do is take the bike for a 10 minute test ride, come and join me.
