Maha Metro’s Decision on Extending Metro Timings Still Pending
Despite fully operational routes from Vanaz to Ramwadi and Pimpri Chinchwad Municipal Corporation (PCMC) to Swargate for the past two months and a significant rise in daily ridership to 1.5 lakh, Maha Metro remains undecided about extending train operations beyond 10pm. The authorities have been exploring the feasibility of extending services until midnight, but concerns over footfall during late-night hours and the additional arrangements required at stations have delayed the decision.
Commuters have been vocal about their demand for extended Metro timings, citing the benefits for late-working professionals and travelers arriving in the city during late hours. Currently, trains operate from 6am to 10pm, with peak hour frequencies of seven minutes and 10 minutes during non-peak hours. While the Metro ran late-night services during special occasions like Ganeshotsav, commuters believe the practice can be implemented regularly. Data indicates strong ridership on the Vanaz-Ramwadi line compared to the PCMC-Swargate route. Metro officials are studying commuting patterns and footfall during the late hours and are also working to improve last-mile connectivity at stations.
