Sri Lanka's newly elected President Anura Kumara Dissanayake delivers a special address to the nation. He outlined his administration’s future plans and key initiatives. This comes after he appointed Dr. Harini Amarasuriya as the country's first new woman Prime Minister since 2000. Dissanayake was sworn into office on Monday (September 23, 2024) after a landslide victory in the presidential polls, where he defeated 38 other candidates and garnered over 42.3 percent of the votes.
Moreover, during the election campaign, Dissanayake vowed to dissolve Parliament and call for snap elections. The present Parliament’s five-year term ends in August next year.
