In a world first, researchers at The Royal Melbourne Hospital and The University of Melbourne have implanted the Strentrode - a tiny device the size of a paperclip - into Phil's head where it’s able to read his brain signals and wirelessly transmit them to a computer that then translates them into onscreen commands.
The Stentrode was implanted at The RMH - a world first.
The researchers caution that while it is some years away before the technology, capable of returning independence to complete everyday tasks is publicly available, the global, multidisciplinary team is working tirelessly to make this a reality.
