What is Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease? Autosomal Recessive Polycystic Kidney Disease, often abbreviated as ARPKD, is a rare genetic disorder that causes cysts to develop in the kidneys. These cysts are simply small, fluid-filled sacs. Normally, your kidneys are made up of millions of tiny structures called nephrons, which clean and filter waste from your blood. In ARPKD, these nephrons become swollen and form cysts. Over time, these cysts can grow and multiply, causing the kidneys to become enlarged. This enlargement can interfere with the kidneys’ ability to filter waste products from the blood, leading to serious health problems. ARPKD is one of those conditions that starts early in life, sometimes even before a baby is born. This disease is considered a rare disease, affecting about 1 in 20,000 to 1 in 40,000 newborns. While it's not common, it's one of the most frequent serious kidney problems seen in infants and young children.
