The KTM-5, also known as 71-605, is the most-produced tram in the world, with over 15,000 produced. These trams were built in the Soviet Union solely for service in the Soviet republics and were not exported. With its distinctive boxy body, large windows, outside-hung sliding doors, and corrugated sidewalls, the KTM-5 is an iconic industrial design symbol of the USSR in the 1970s and 1980s.
These fascinating trams continue to provide service in several cities in ex-Soviet states, mostly in Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan. However, KTM-5s are also sporadically used in Daugavpils, Latvia! This is the only tram system in the European Union and the Schengen Area that operates Soviet and Russian-made trams.
With some planning and creative travel plans, this is one of the most feasible ways for a Westerner to experience a KTM-5 tram. We hope you enjoy this deep-dive video into the world of the KTM-5!
