“PIONEERS OF THE NAMIBIAN BORDER WAR | Part 1”
During the 1960s most African countries had gained independence except for Namibia. Geographically, Namibia is made up of savannah, dry scrubland, as well as the Kalahari and the Namib Deserts.
Namibia was then known as South West Africa a territory under South African administration from 1915 to 1990, after which it became modern-day Namibia.
The South African Apartheid regime believed that by holding onto Namibia, the guerrilla war in Angola would be kept further away from South Africa. South African apartheid laws were extended to Namibia and prevented black Namibians from having any political rights, as well as restricted social and economic freedoms.
In 1990, South West Africa was granted independence as the Republic of Namibia except for Walvis Bay and the Penguin Islands, which continued to remain under South African rule until 1994.
